About the present President of Bethune College Sammilani

Dr. Sima Kundu, ex-student and ex-teacher of Bethune College, has taken over the charge as the president of Bethune College Sammilani in 2011 from Smt. Sukla Bandyopadhyay. A new governing Body has been elected for the period from 2011 – 2013. Dr. Kundu was elected as President for the second term also – from 2013 – 2015. She has been putting her best effort for the successful implementation of all the events the Sammilani has been organizing since 1921 – the year of its foundation. All the events, like Annual Re-union, Ananda Mela, Bijaya Sammilani etc have been organized successfully during her tenure.

One important achievement of Sammilani during her tenure is the continuation of the process started dueing the tenure of Smt. Sukla Bandyopadhyay – the former President – related to the conferment of Pass certificate of Entrance Examination by Calcutta University posthumously on Smt. Chandra mukhi Bose which was denied to her on grounds of gender.

Sammilani pursued the subject, sentcontinuous reminders to the Vice-chancellor, Calcutta University and finally became successful in convincing Calcutta University that a historical injustice was done to Chandra Mukhi Basu. Finally, in the convocation held on 29th November, 2014, the pass certificate was conferred on Chandra Mukhi Basu by the Chancellor, the then Honourable Governor Sri M. K. Narayanan. Dr. sima Kundu and other members of Sammilani were invited and attended the Convocation ceremony to be a witness of this historic occasion. Sammilani is especially thankful to Dr.Sunanda Ghosh for bringing into light all the facts related to Smt. Basu.

Dr. Sima Kundu, Dr. Shyamali Sarkar (Treasurer) and Smt. Smita Ghosh (Secretary) have tried their best to register this 93-year old alumni association with the Government of West Bengal. All necessary papers and documents have been submitted to the appropriate authorities to that the process of registration can be completed as early as possible.

We hope to continue our bond with our Alma Mater and wish it the highest honour and a glorious future.
